mech's Game Diary: Day 1 - Lawn of the Dead

Plants vs Zombies is the most recent game to have emerged from the minds of the genius' at Popcap, and I've been hooked since the second it unlocked and slowly installed itself (stupidly slow Internet) from Steam. My almighty defence of Siamese Sunflowers, sub-Arctic temperature watermelons and the almighty tall-nut have dominated the game, shredding through the hordes of zombies wanting to EAT MY BRAINS....in big green letters.

It's not just been Plants vs Zombies which has taken control over the last couple of days. Bioshock also turned up on my doorstep (tenner on Play.com) and the only other games I have ever been so immersed in have been Fallout 3 and Half-Life 2 + Episodes (stories to talk about another day). The morality is interesting.

Both games I recommend any video game player should try out, you may get a flavour for an entirely new genre from those 2.

mech Out.

P.S. - Fear the Big Daddy.

Just Cause 2

Just Cause 2, created by Avalance Studios and developed by Eidos Interactive, is the sequel to Just Cause (on Xbox360/PC).
This game features a new main character, who speaking as a narrator, tells the viewer about how he has a mission to take down one man, however, this man was the eprson who told him everything he knows.

Now possibly, I could be wrong in saying this, but I just think that Just Cause 2 will be a let down. Now don't get me wrong, I loved Just Cause, and thought it was a well done game, prehaps lacking in the story region, but easily making up for it in a new style of gameplay. However, in Just Cause 2, this game play seems to be overdone, not even seeming to take in the limits of the human body, at one point in the trailer shown here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEswmZIrnOU&feature=channel_page
The main character is shown to be, at one point, standing on top of a fighter jet.
Now some may see this as brilliant, but I just think it could possibly be something in a series of overdone errors, such a new, good looking, but seemingly overpowered grappling hook type weapon.
However, the features that made Just Cause so good are still there, a flexible style of gameplay, well thought out chances to use the parachute, and what seems to be explosive action from start to finish, will still most likely make this game worth playing, but maybe not worth remembering. At this point, only time can tell.

Red Steel 2

Red Steel 2: A game anticipated by some, and cast aside by others, due to the first game not quite meeting everyones standards.
This game, however, is desgined around the new Wii Motion Plus Controller, which is meant to give it far more flexibilty, as well as a drastically shortened lag time between player and on screen movement.
The game's developer Ubisoft stated in an interview at this years E3 that Red Steel 2 would be focused on a East meets West theme, also making the most of the new Wii Motion Plus Controller, showing in their trailer greatly improved flexibilty, allowing the player to pull off a series of complex moves.
The release of this game is set for the Holiday of 2009, however, questions are starting to rise over how long the Wii will be able keep it's place as the only major console which allows characters to use the controller for movement by moving it instead of just pressing buttons, as Sony have shown their new controller which works in a very similar way to the Wii controller, but also Microsoft have shown a revolutionary new way of playing games, using no controller at all.
However, Sony's new controller is expected to be released in the spring of 2010, and Microsoft's new "no controller" method of playing games, is most likely going to appear with the release of the Xbox 720 as standard (current release date unknown) or as an expensive accesory for the Xbox 360 in the future, however, as of yet, no concrete information has been given.

Assassins Creed 2- First Impressions

Assassins Creed 2 was one of the many new games that Ubisoft will be releasing this year. The story, a direct sequel to Assassins Creed, continues to follow the story of Desmond Myles, a bartender in the future, who's ancestors are mysterious assassins.

In Assassins Creed 2, the game follows the life of Ezio Auditore di Firenze, a man who though born into a noble family, soon sets out for revenge once his family has been killed. Unlike Assassins Creed one (set in the Holy Wars period), this game is set in the Renaissance, meaning that more imaginitive weaponry has been developed.

As you can all see from the trailer of the game which can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96ojysgQ7VE&feature=channel
Ezio has Leonardo di Vinci as one if his friends and mentors, which grants access to interesting new weaponry such as the glider.
Other key features of the game are: the apparent ability to swim, dual hidden blades, a possible projectile hidden blade, the ability to use enemy weaponry against them and high level hand to hand combat.

The release of the game is set for the "holiday of 2009", and judging from what I've seen, it should be pretty good.
